snippets from the world of André Werner
interactive installations | art that explores the relationship between the viewer and the image
André Werner is a German artist who works with various media, such as video, photography, sound and light. One of his main interests is the interaction between the image and the viewer, and how this relationship can be influenced by different factors. In his interactive installations, he uses motion sensors, microphones and cameras in different ways to integrate the viewer into his work. By doing so, he challenges the passive role of the spectator and invites them to become part of the artistic process.
One of his most famous interactive installations is “Das Winkende Mädchen” (The Waving Girl), a series of light objects that show the image of a girl waving at the viewer. However, the image only appears for a few seconds before fading away, and it only reappears when the viewer waves back at the object. This creates a playful and intimate dialogue between the viewer and the image, as well as a sense of curiosity and anticipation.
André Werner’s interactive installations and artworks are created in the presence of the viewer and show that our relationship to the images is more important than the creation of new images. He explores how images can communicate, provoke and transform emotions, thoughts and behaviors. His works are also part of a larger trend in contemporary art that seeks to involve the audience in more participatory and immersive ways, breaking down the barriers between art and life. He is one of the pioneers of interactive art in Germany and has exhibited his works internationally.
